Although Wedel is part of the metropolitan region of Hamburg, it belongs administratively to Pinneberg which is a district of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's northernmost state and also called 'country between the seas'.

Wedel (about 30.000 inhabitants) benefits definitely from its key position directly on the banks of the river Elbe, situated very close to the city of Hamburg on one side and to the beautiful countryside on the other side.

The suburban train (called "S-Bahn") line S1 taktes you directly from Wedel to Hamburg's main tourist attractions, every 20 minutes during the day and every 10 minutes at rush hour in the morning and in the afternoon. Without changing the line, you get within 20 minutes to BLANKENESE and its beautiful almost mediterranean stairquarter district: It takes 30 minutes to Hamburgs multicultural quarter ALTONA, 35 minutes to world famous REEPERBAHN, the redlight district, and LANDUNGSBRÜCKEN (harbour boat tours/St. Michaels/ historic warehouse district), 45 minutes to Hamburg main station and about 1 hour directly to Hamburg Airport!

Wedel's main attraction is certainly the river Elbe and the leisure activities thereby offered:

- the world famous ship welcoming station "Willkomm Höft" where all the bigger
vessels coming along are greeted with their national anthem
- long walks along the dyke and cycling tours, trips across the river with the
Lühe-ferry to "Altes Land", Europe's larges fruit cultivation area
-  a visit of our marina named "Hamburger Yachthafen" that hosts more than
2000 sailing and motor boats each season
- lots of nice restaurants, bistros and bars, 'farm cafés' and country stores
that offer homemade cakes, fruits and vegetables fresh from the field

- and YES, you can even relax on one of our sandy beaches if weather permits!
Wedel has its own BEACHCLUB open from early May until End September
where you can enjoy your cocktail sitting in a deckchair and letting the ships
   pass by.

So, although 'no more' than a little sister of stunning old Hamburg, Wedel is indeed worth a visit. Come and convince yourself! We will be glad to give you more interesting information on our hometown.
